I saw in some previous post that it’s correct to say помидоров and not помидор. What about макароны? Is it the same -ов in the genitive?

The ending -ов in the genitive plural is added to those nouns which end in a hard consonant in the singular. For example:

помидор - помидоров
краб - крабов
стол - столов
компьютер - компьютеров

The noun “макароны” is used only in the plural so it has no singular form. Russian nouns of this kind (каникулы, очки, брюки, ножницы etc.) take the ending -ов in the genitive plural if they have a stressed -ы or -и in the nominative:

очки - очков
носки - носков

In case -ы or -и is unstressed, they are just dropped:

макароны - макарон
ножницы - ножниц

Толковый словарь русского языка Ушакова
Макароны
МАКАРО’НЫ, н, ед. нет

It’s not very important in informal speech. Don’t focus on such nuances smile
