Don;t forget that Russia is a HUGE country so we have a larger population of those who drink. Other countries drink not less than we do, I think. And they call it “alcoholism”... Well, in Russia that’s called “alcoholism” too - it’s just that we don’t mind it!
It’s not about beating world records or something!
People in Russia have a different attitude to alcohol when they “drink till they drop”. Europeans mostly consume alcohol - expensive alcohol(!) - because it is supposed to be cool. Or because they have almost everything money can buy and they see no sense in further living.
Russians drink because their life is very tough and rough one way or another. They do it to get carried away from countless problems - big or small - and get some strength to survive another day. Yes, some of them see no point in living, too, but still they don’t do it out of hedonism or something and they always believe things will get better someday.
